ABICE CARPENTRY PROGRAMME COURSE OUTLINE
Course Description
Carpentry is a two-year programme that enable students to learn hands-on new construction skills. They will learn framing, drywall, rough and fine finishing, siding, shingled roofing, door and window installation. Training includes blueprint reading, safety practices, and trade mathematics. Course safety is reinforced continually throughout the course sequence. Additionally, Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, Business Ethics, Communication and Occupational Math are integrated throughout the curriculum. Also, the students will complete a four-month Job Training Exercise in year two.
Course Objectives:
The student will be able:
- to responsibly do all work tasks
- to understand the principles of sound and safe construction
- to know the characteristics and proper use of building construction materials
- to read basic drawings, do simple layout work and calculate quantities of materials
- to build different types of wood framed buildings and apply exterior and interior finish of wood
- to be proficient in the safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools
- to be familiar with the work of other tradesmen in the building industry
- to perform assigned tasks in accordance with quality and production standards required in industry
- to comply with safety regulations of the construction industry

Course Requirements
Students enrolled in Carpentry will be required to become familiar with the proper use and care of Carpentry tools and equipment. The students will become aware of safety practices and accident prevention in accordance with CARICOM standards. The student will also become familiar with measurement, layout procedures and the materials used in this field as sustainable practices when working on and developing site projects.
Occupational requirements are met through project-based learning combined with the necessary theory and employability skills. Course activities and projects required for successful completion of the programme include ongoing assessment, portfolio development, and final assessments.
