ABICE ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION PROGRAMME COURSE OUTLINE

N.B Students in this program are eligible to receive industry recognized certification through the Antigua and Barbuda National Training Agency (ABNTA) upon successful completion of the course along with an ABICE TVET Certificate.

Course Description:

Electrical Installation is a two-year programme of study that prepares students to perform installation methods for various electrical wiring methods and safely perform their tasks according to Antigua and Barbuda’s Building Code, OSHA and NEC rules. Course safety is reinforced continually throughout the course sequence. Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, Business Ethics, communication and Occupational Math are integrated throughout the curriculum. One-day attachment and field trips are also included in the programme.  In addition, students will complete a four-month Job Training Exercise in year two.

Course Requirements

Students enrolled in Electrical Installation will be required to become familiar with the proper use and care of Electrical tools and equipment. The students will become aware of safety practices and accident prevention in accordance with CARICOM standards. The student will also become familiar with measurement, layout procedures and the materials used in this field as sustainable practices when working on and developing site projects.

Occupational requirements are met through project-based learning combined with the necessary theory and employability skills. Course activities and projects required for successful completion of the programme include ongoing assessment, portfolio development, and final assessments.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

 

  • Understand Health and safety in Electrical field
  • Understand Workplace communication
  • Perform the correct installation procedures and wiring connections for common residential and commercial switching devices outlets and low voltage circuits in accordance with the National Building Code.
  • Perform proper installation procedures for various wiring methods in accordance with the National Building Code.
  • Install a residential consumer service including a variety of household circuits.
  • Prepare a material list, layout drawing and panel schedule for a residential consumer service.
  • Install electronic components for extra-low voltage signal circuits.
  • Prepare wiring, layout and schematic diagrams for extra-low voltage signal circuits.
  • Terminate communication, data and telephone cables.
  • Safely use test equipment and power tools commonly found in industry.
  • Perform Conduit bending installation and grounding.
  • Know the different colour code and wire size and Circuit boards
  • Can troubleshooting and perform housekeeping methods
  • Learn different type of electrical material
  • Know Electrical and electronic measuring devices
  • Use graduated measuring devices
  • Can troubleshoot residential and commercial motors and transformers
  • Perform Soldering and di-soldering electrical and electronic components
  • Interpret Electrical Drawings (floor plans) and prepare estimates
